MOMday Morning for November

It’s MOMday!! I feel a little last minute this month because I’ve been a little busy…

IMG_3045Luckily, I get to open with two pretty cool announcements (No mom, I’m not preggers). First, we are adding another AMAZING business to the MOMday Morning fun. Drum roll please……

Soni from Stringbean Company!!

I’m a huge fan of her blog, her store and her products! I know you’ll like her too! (see all my posts with Stringbean stuff)

Second, our MOMday Morning cash prize is now $100!! Can you believe it!?!? Just in time for the holidays!! We are so excited to bless you with even more cold hard cash along with this month’s prizes!!

Let’s get started!

You all know the guidelines…

This month we’re featuring Pretend City’s Good to Go from Head to Toe program and Dr Ann Corwin aka The Parenting Doctor.

Pretend City curious george

 IMG_1918

I met Dr Ann at a free class held at Pretend City (yes, FREE!), called Toddler Talk. The casual (free) class takes place in a play type setting. Toys are set up for the kiddos and Dr Ann teaches on topics the parents pick as they play. When one of the kiddos has a major meltdown a little squabble breaks out, Dr Ann shows the parents how to handle the situation. The (free) class was SO informative and practical!

Check out some of her advice about tantrums, potty training, sucking thumbs & using pacifiers, and lying!
Some of my favorite advice from the (free) class was, “our job as parents is not to shelter our children from disappointment but to teach our children how to respond to disappointment in a healthy way.” The more I think about that statement the more it resounds in my parenting everyday!

The prizes are…

As a family, choose a senior or child in need and buy presents for them. Local agencies often have displays at stores, sometimes the families are listed in the newspaper, or just do a search for “angel tree” and your city. It gives a good feeling to know that you’ve helped someone else and it’s a reminder to young and old about the true meaning of Christmas.

We love to let the kids open 2 present on Christmas eve, always pajamas and a holiday book. That way they have new, cute pjs for Christmas morning pics and we read the holiday book to get in the spirit before bed!

As a tradition, I kick off the holidays with Day after Thanksgiving shopping. It is a family affair, my husband and sister go with me. I have been going for 15 years straight. After Thanksgiving, it is a free for all for holiday fun, including music and decorations.

We host a cookie decorating party every year and invite all the little ones along with all the parents. I pre-bake sugar cookies the day before and leave them undecorated then purchase icings and candy for decorating. The kids have a blast, we then order pizza, watch holiday movies until it’s time to go home where all the little ones get to take their cookies home.

Some family holiday traditions that I enjoy with my kiddies are baking sugar cookies and gingerbread houses, walking around Naples Island to see the lights, Elf on a Shelf, reading the Nativity Story and acting it out with Fisher Price Little People, and leaving a jar of change that we have collected throughout the year on someone needy’s doorstep. All things we truly look forward to each year.

    Thanks for the MOMday mornings!

we decorate ALOT! One of our biggest holiday traditions is picking colors and/or themes for the house for the holidays and then assembling (the no less than 4) christmas trees throughout the house. Since the trees are so elaborate and time consuming to assemble we usually leave them up until feb. 5 (my younger sister’s birthday, she likes to call them birthday trees : )

And then we use all different colored ribbons to hang the pine cones so it’s very festive looking when we’re done and the birds love it!

My holiday tip- We’re always so busy traveling to family on Christmas Eve & Christmas Day. I wanted a special day with just our little family (us and our son) before all the craziness and travel. So, we open our family Christmas presents the Saturday before Christmas. Then we stay home and play with our gifts and just have fun together. It gives us that time alone, and it’s fun to have presents a little early too. 😀

Our fave holiday family tradition is going to look at the lights somewhere like your local zoo…we also have them at other places and they are usually reasonable. Pack snacks/drinks/and be sure to bring your gloves and super warm clothing!

We all go to my Great Grandmother’s house on a Sunday in November and a Sunday in December! Family members we don’t get to see often comes in, we eat, sometimes we get to go outside depending on what the weather is like, Sometimes we get to go play in the snow. The Older ones, we look at pictures and talk about when we were younger, and what we have done the past year. Sometimes we make cookies, but it is something we only do Two maybe three times a year. This year we will have one less due to the unexpected death of my 18 year old cousin in July. It will be different and difficult but Im sure we will still have a good time knowing he will spend this Christmas with our Great grandfather in Heaven!

If your kids have a good life and you think they may not appreciate it, an idea for a family activity is to volunteer during the holiday season. Check your local area and I’m sure you’ll find many opportunities to help others. How about serving Thanksgiving and/or Christmas dinner to the needy. Have your kids pick one gift they received to donate to kids who may have no gifts. I gave this idea to my boss years ago and he said the first season was the best holiday season they had ever had and now it’s not only a family holiday tradition but they’ve found opportunities to help others throughout the year.

We have a couple different holiday tradions, so here are a few of my favorite.

My three boys and I bake holiday baskets for our neighbors and deliver them one week before Christmas.

I make the boys matching PJ’s to wear Christmas eve.

Christmas eve we drive the neighborhood to look at Christmas lights.

We open presents one at a time and one person at a time. If it takes three days to open them then that is fine. We all open one and then take time to play with/check it out. Take a break eat/ snack and have coffee and then when all are ready head back to do some more. I love it because it gives everyone time to see all of the gifts and the reactions to things that were given with thought and love.

We do a family gift swap, and it’s hilarious fun. We designate a present amount and everyone brings a wrapped gift. We have numbers in a lid. Everyone draws in order of their number. The first person opens gift. The second person can ‘steal’ that gift or open another, and so on and so forth. Everyone in the family loves the game and looks forward to it every year.

We have an ornament exchange every year. Each of the kids draw another kids name out of a hat. Then they make an ornament for that person. It is a lot of fun and they usually want to make more ornaments for other family members when they are done. We enjoy putting them on the Christmas tree along with the ornaments they received from previous years.

Our favorite tradition takes place the Saturday after Thanksgiving. We live in the beautiful Black Hills of SD, so we go tree hunting. And when I say tree hunting, I mean hunting. After we find the right tree, we shoot it down with a shotgun, no saws needed. Safety first with all the little ones. But each year we have a better story to tell about the adventure then the year before. We have so much fun spending the day as a family.

Up until last year, the only fun tradition that we had, was to wait until the absolute last minute, I’m talking a couple of days until Christmas Eve to go out and cut down a tree, and then hand it off to me, to decorate. Fun times.

My mom bought us the most beautiful artificial tree last year and handed me a storage chest of the most beautiful ornaments and accessories to put on it. I hated to take it down last year, and I can’t wait to put it up this year.

Twelve days before Christmas (dec. 13) we (my mom, dad, sister, brother, nephews & neice) do something as a family dedicated to each one of the “12 days of Christmas” song, while counting down to Christmas … :

1st day: we all make chicken (partridge) with baked pears (in a pear tree)
2nd day: we all help to make turtle brownies in the shape of doves & have 2 each (2 turtle doves)
3rd day: we have a French Horn competition (French hens)
4th day: we have a day @ the park and see if we can find any “calling birds”
5th day: we pick names from a hat & have to buy or creatively make that person a ring, but it has to have a meaning to it
6th day: we dye eggs Christmas colors (geese-a-laying)
7th day: we have a apple dunking contest, acting as the swans-a-swimming
8th day: we normally go to our local farm if it’s open to milk cows for fresh milk, if not we bake cookies & dip them in milk (maids a milking)
9th day: the whole day we play music in the house while dancing & singing (ladies dancing)
10th day: we go in the backyard & have a leap frog competition, whoever loses has to wash dishes for that night (lords a leaping)
11th day: we go look at all the Christmas lights at night, and 1 of our neighbors always has a display of Pipers piping in their yard
12th day: we (my mom mainly) make this HUGE dinner & we all have these little drums and when 12am comes we all run around the house playing the drums happily because Christmas has arrived!! 🙂

Let the kids shape the dough however they want, or use cookie cutters for angels, stars, or tree shapes. Poke a small hole through the top of each creation. let the creations dry overnight, the next day they’ll be hard and ready for hanging! Put a piece of ribbon through the hole on top and knot it, so you can hang the ornaments on the tree, or around the house. The kids can even paint the dough ornaments when they are dried, using non-toxic finger or watercolor paints! 🙂

This will probably sound boring, but our main tradition is just to spend time together and put up all of the decorations and trees together. I always look forward to it – it is one of my favorite days of the year. We always have Christmas songs on in the background. I do always try to make some baked goodies for it as well. Thanks for the chance! 🙂

Our little tradition is letting the kids decorate the tree…alone! Each year the ornaments get a little higher up! We have taken pictures of it each year, and I printed them in 8x10s and framed them, so along with the “sitting on Santa’s lap at the mall” photos (framed), that is how I decorated the house! It actually looks super cute…I hang them all over the mantle and they giggle at how low the ornaments were the previous years while my husband and I giggle that they are STILL super low!
This year will be more fun since we have one more helper, and most of the ornaments are homemade!

On Christmas morning when the kids wake up they find a note under their pillows with a clue that leads them to the next note/clue and so on until they find their first present. Which is usually new pj’s/robe/house shoes, which they change into before coming to the family room for gifts and pictures. They love the treasure hunt almost more than the gifts.

We celebrate the whole religious aspect of Christmas. Starting with Advent right after Thanksgiving and ending with the 12th day of Christmas. We love lighting the Advent candles and opening a door on each day of Advent on the Advent calendar. It’s sad how the whole Christmas season and celebration is lost on most people.

We so the advent too! What’s the 12th day of Christmas?

      • Denise B. says

        November 4, 2010 at 10:17 am

The twelve days of Christmas are the days following or including Christmas day:

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twelve_days_of_Christmas

The Christmas tree should stay up until at least the day of Epiphany, but my mother kept it up until the end of the month. 🙂

My mother being from Germany, we do many traditional things during the whole Christmas season.

There is also St. Nicholas Day on December 6:

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Nicholas#Saint_Nicholas_Day

We really distance ourselves from the commercialized Christmas. We have everything we need and don’t really need anything, so we just buy a couple of small things for our children. We really just focus on the celebrations. I just love the the European traditions! 🙂

We’ve been doing this ever since my son was old enough to help cook to combat the madness of Christmas over shadowing Thanksgiving. We don’t listen to any Christmas music or watch any Christmas shows (harder to do than you think!) until the night before Thanksgiving. Then after dinner we put the Charlie Brown Christmas CD on in the kitchen and do all our baking for Thanksgiving day and we always stop and dance when the Peanuts song comes on!

My family is of German descent, and every year we celebrate St. Nicholas day. After dinner St. Nick comes pounding on the door and leaves a canvas bag filled with clementines, chocolates, treats for the dogs, and little gifts for the youngest in the family.

Every year I would get a new special ornament for the Christmas tree for my children. In 20 years, they had ornaments for their own household. We also had an Advent calendar to count the days up to Christmas.

To think that my Sons would share some of my baking history with their children is an amazing thought.

I grew up in chilly Upstate NY where we cut our own tree in the snow every year for Christmas. We started the same tradition with our kids here in the South a few years back! Even though there’s been a couple years we’ve had on shorts and t-shirts and sweat our butts off dragging the tree to the car…it’s a memorable, enjoyable experience we treasure with our kids!

On Christmas Eve, my whole family gets together and goes to eat pizza, followed by a movie. We then go look around at the Christmas lights and take a short drive up a mountain so we can look down into the valley to look at the town. We open our presents on Christmas Eve so the kids can remember the true meaning of Christmas… plus we don’t need to wake up early.

A few years ago I started making personalized ornaments. This year I will be adding a new ornament for my newest grandson. The ornaments make a statement for who each individual is. They are beautiful and as my collection increases I move further and further away from the traditional store bought ornaments. The personalized ornaments decorate my tree and I will have them to pass along to other family members throughout the years.
