Have a Pinterest Party

Are you on Pinterest yet? If you haven’t heard about Pinterest, here’s what it is… (my explanation)

Pinterest is hard to describe… mmmmmmm… it’s a way to organize all the fun stuff you see online. Let’s say you find a great idea for a birthday party, but the party is three months away. So you make a mental note to remember that idea. You could print it on paper (remember that stuff?) but you know you won’t find it again, and who needs more paperwork (MOM!!!)? Three months of school, laundry, work, life, love, smiles, cries and burnt dinners (oh, that last one is just me) go by and the party comes and goes. It’s great, of course, but the next day you are on the Internet and you stumble across the idea again and you’re like. “Cr%$!!!! That would have been awesome!!”

Pinterest is an online “pin board” for you to put the links you find. So if you find that perfect rainbow cupcake you can click it, and virtually put it on your Birthday Party Pin board. The link goes there along with a picture and you can put a note next to your pin. Like, “try this with felt” or “the perfect gift for mom” or… you get the idea. People have boards for each of their children, sewing, wedding planning, places they want to visit, meal plans, funny sites… the list goes on and on and on and on and on…

The problem with Pinterest is it’s easy to spend all your time “pinning” and never actually doing.

Have a Pinterest Party.

Problem solved!!!!

Any excuse to get together with friends and eat is awesome.

Right!?!?!

My first experience with a Pinterest party was just before Christmas. The hosts picked three projects from their pin boards – things they thought could be finished in one evening and asked everyone to bring $20, their glue gun and a treat to eat (from their pin boards, of course). I brought my $20, forgot my glue gun and I don’t even have a recipe pin board because cooking just isn’t my thang… I brought bruschetta from Sam’s Club and they let me stay anyway.

How fun is that!

So fun!

Later I was hanging with some friends after the Queen Bee Market and tossed out the idea. We’ve been faithful to our Pinning Party every 6 weeks-ish.

The first party was in January so we did a Valentine’s Day fabric banner, heart pom pom necklace…

      photo 3     photo 2

…and we made this Life is Beauty-Full sign (tutorial coming soon!) and that little frame to the left was the craft fail of the evening but I think I salvaged mine to displayable status.

IMG_2014

Side Note: The fabric banner is one of my all time favorite crafts ever. Sooooooo easy. I’ve made one for every holiday since. Make one for spring. Now.

IMG_0549

I wasn’t able to go to the next party because it was on our anniversary weekend (I was bummed) but you better believe I paid my $20 and got all the craft supplies I need for the projects. I can’t wait to get them finished and share them. Check out this post and this post all about the party to see the crafties.

Last weekend we got our craft on again with this lil’ beauty and the flowers on this ‘L’ (I yarned the L at the first Pinterest party I attended). Plus a few more I need to finish or take better pix. (I’ll share someday!)

photo 5     IMG_2011

Here is how we organize our Pin Parties.

Step 1 – Send out an evite. We’ve met on weekday evenings after kiddos are in bed and on weekends.

Step 2 – Choose the Pins. Try to pick things you can get done in one night and if they can’t be finished in one evening make sure you can send the needed supplies home with each guest. i.e. if the craft requires some crazy gadget only you have, be sure that craft is finished at the party, if it just requires hot glue then it’s OK to send it home.

Step 3 – Buy supplies. After you have a final head count you can get all the stuff you need. The nice thing about doing group crafts is buying in bulk. And you can get something new or pricey because it comes in packs of 24. Divided among the group = cheap.

photo 4

Step 4 – Hang, chat, eat, craft. Repeat.

 P1017228   P1017226

It’s always good (for non cookers like me) if you have a few people in the group who are blessed in the kitchen. Once again I forgot to bring food… so thankful they are understanding. This time everything was delish but my most favorite were the carrot cake cookies and these peanut butter chocolate things. And the most fun treat was smores’ in a jar – pudding, crushed graham crackers, tiny marshmallows toasted with a torch. Awesome.

P1017231

Our little core group of Pinners include Jaime, Aimee, Bev, Andrea and Kyla. But at each party the host sets the parameters about inviting friends. I’m hoping to host in our house (Squeeee, we have a house!) after we move in. Don’t you think the best way to get things done around the house is to host something? Anything.

Happy Pinning and Partying.

Cy’s Breakfast Beach Bash

Since I seem to be in a birthday mood with yesterday’s post, I thought I would share Cy’s last birthday.
His first one.
The one that happened almost a year ago and I never shared.
Oh well.
It was sooooo darn cute
.
IMG_2595

I was inspired by a friend’s beach party a few years before. It was such a great idea because breakfast food is easy to serve, and the morning start time doesn’t conflict with any naps AND all your friends don’t have to spent their whole Saturday at a baby birthday… they can hang at the beach.

Décor: The beach!!!
We borrowed an ez-up and used big tables for the food. Guests were told to bring their beach gear for seating. I kinda went with the tiki look (mainly because 99 cent store had a bunch of tiki stuff) and it turned out super cute.

Menu: Mountain of donuts, bagels, muffins, loads of fruit and some breakfast sandwiches. We had plenty of bottled water and OJ to drink and fancy pineapple straws finished off the table.

IMG_2607

Favors: A bundle of sand toys!!

I took an Instagram picture of Cy at the beach and added a bit of wording (just like Eli’s last bday) for the food table and his party favors.

IMG_2586 IMG_2581

I added a bit of fun to a plain mini cake (thank you Littlest Pet Shop turtle, tiki candle, and palm trees) from Sam’s Club for his smash cake and we had a load of cupcakes for kiddos to devour. I feel like I did something fun with the cupcakes but I don’t have any pictures and for the life of me I can’t remember… baby brain.

I love love love getting a kiddo group shot at every birthday party. It is so fun to see who was at each party and how all the kiddos grow every year.

IMG_2669

Were we wearing coordinating outfits?
Is the sky blue?
As blue as the aqua tees my boys were wearing
.

IMG_2600

We had so much fun and the whole thing was so easy to put together there might be a repeat this year.

Hope you get inspired to throw a Breakfast Bash of your own… beach or park or backyard it’s a guaranteed good day for all!

Valentine’s Birthday Dilemma

Easter is over. Now we have a bit of a holiday break before the 4th of July. Usually this is my kiddo birthday party planning break time as well, but this year Cora Jane wanted her birthday in the new house and we said yes.

I’m not sure why.

Now there will be a 4 month gap between her actual birthday and her party. That bothers me… not sure why (again). While the party is in ‘birthday limbo land’ I have had loads of time to prep and collect bits and pieces here and there for the event. And I’ve had time to think about the date of Cora Jane’s birthday – it’s on Valentines day. I feel like she is a bit short-changed when it comes to “her” day. (I’ve talked about it at length before.)

I like to to a little family celebration for Valentines Day – just a special dessert or fun dinner with a little valentine for each kiddo. Every year I agonize over the fact that Cora Jane is cheated on her birth “day.” Then after all is said and done, I make the decision to celebrate Valentines on the evening before, on the 13th, then have Cora’s birthday celebrations on Valentines Day. The problem is, I ALWAYS realize that after Valentines, and everything is all mushed together. Then I feel guilty. Isn’t mom guilt the most ridiculous thing ever!?! She doesn’t even notice and I’ve only had 4 chances to work this whole thing out AND she won’t remember those 4 any way. What-evah.

On birthdays around here I do candles in everything they eat during the day along with the birthday song. Super fun, simple and the kiddos LOVE it!

Cora Jane picked Rosa’s Pizza for her birthday dinner. So almost all our pictures have Bud Light banners in the background. Lovely.

Rosa's Pizza Placentia

I love everything about these pictures…

My mom gave the favorite gift of the evening. Unlimited quarters for Little Miss to use on the vending machines. Almost like a party game.Rosa's Pizza Placentia

In case you are wondering about her chosen theme… it’s Rainbow Puppy.

What is Rainbow Puppy? (you ask)

Well, I have no idea. Something from her sweet little head and we just went with it. I found paw print wrapping paper at the dollar tree and paired it up with colored ribbon. I’ve also found fun rainbow stuff at Oriental Trading for the favors!

My cousin came over last weekend and we did a little experimenting with food coloring and sour belts. Good times.

Now, if we can just finish up that house we can actually have this Rainbow Puppy shin-dig!

We Blew Our Savings

IMG_1407

Does this house make my wallet look small?

Because my wallet sure feels a lot smaller!!

We bought our first house. It is fantastic – perfect in every way.

OK, it is kinda a dump.

It was a drug house and (according to the cute 4th grade girl next door) the SWAT team even raided the place.

I’ve be donning knee pads and old jeans every evening to demo every remnant of gross house into the dumpster. Who knew knee pads could be so hot! The carpet had to be taken out because 4 families were living in the house and all that foot traffic made black foot paths where there wasn’t furniture.

It was gross. gross. Gross. Gross.

  photo 2    photo 1

We go to the hardware store. A lot. The kids and I get bored. A lot.
I found the reflection knob pic on my phone after one trip. I know I’m his mom, but I was pretty impressed. I’m thinking Eli is a budding photographer!

  photo 3    photo 4

Picking paint colors is so stressful. I may have even switched the main color after a few walls had been painted. Eeeep.

  photo 2   photo 2

Many many, before and after pictures coming soon. As soon as we get some cute afters going on!

We won’t be moving till mid-June so we have plenty of time to work on things. Thankfully that’s a long way off because of all the work that has to be done. And it’s not soon enough as space is tight around here.

photo 1

Since we are house poor saving money, I have learn how to cook. I actually like it, as long as I plan ahead. I’ll share some of my favorite dishes. I’m nothing close to a chef and my recipes aren’t crazy amazing. But I promise they are yummy, very very VERY EASY and cheap. This one is from my mom!

Pizza Dough from Scratch (this one is made for the food processor)

In a measuring cup:
Add 1 tablespoon of sugar & 1 tablespoon of yeast to 1 cup of hot water. Place in a non ventilated place for 15 minutes. (We use the microwave)
If it foams up then you know the yeast is good to go.

While you are waiting for the yeast to foam…
Add
, 2 2/3 cup of flour, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1 heaping tablespoon of basil, 1 heaping tablespoon of oregano in to the food processor and mix a bit.

Pull your yeast mixture out of the micro and add 1 tablespoon of oil.

Slowly pour the wet mixture into the mixing food processor.

It will roll into a ball.

Take the dough ball out and cover lightly with oil.

Place it in a container with a lid (or use saran wrap to cover the top)

Put the container into a non ventilated place (We use the micro… again)

After about an hour the dough is ready.

Rub the remaining oil from the container onto the bigger dough ball.

Mash the ball out flat on a pan to your desired thickness.

Put in the oven for about 7 minutes at 400 degrees. Keep an eye out the first time if you like soft dough (like we do), it can overcook quickly.

For the pizza…

Add pizza sauce (we always use Prego Spaghetti sauce because I can get it in bulk at Sam’s Club for a multitude of dishes), cheese and all the fixings then put in the oven till the cheese is yummy melty goodness and you are DONE!

Even though there are a lot of steps above it’s actually REALLY easy. I just broke it down so much because that’s the way I like it!

A Perfect Easter Day

Easter sandbox

Easter is my favorite holiday. Spring has arrived, candy is everywhere and my matchy match obsession is cool for one day.

This year my mom made the girls dresses – Cora Jane’s out of a vintage pillowcase and Tess’ out of vintage tea towels. It was adorable. ADOABLE!!

I made the boys matching bow ties. ADORABLE!!

Matching Easter outfits Matching Easter bow ties

I love Easter baskets. All sorts of bright goodies nestled into a basket. It’s perfection… and the only holiday Hot Hubby and I exchange gifts. (Random, I know)

One of my favorite traditions is the gift of a bathing suit in the basket. It’s a great way to kick of the hot months here in So Cal! (A tradition I stole from a friend’s family!)

I also found play-doh eggs at the 99 cent store. 12 filled with play-doh for 99 cents. CRAZY deal!!

Church was great. We had baptisms, and true to form I wept like a baby the whole time.

Rock Harbor Easter

Then we had Easter lunch. Eli thought his new LEGO book would make the perfect “middle-piece.” I love that my 5-year-old boy knows a great centerpiece can make a break a table.

My mom put together some beautiful arrangements from her garden – rosemary with red geraniums.

Easter certerpieces Easter certerpieces

I had given up candy for lent so I ate a bunch on Easter. I felt sick later and into the next day. I’m thinking my self-candy ban will be extended. Maybe just on weekends? Does anyone do something like that? Does it work?

Easter certerpieces

Of course we had the Easter Egg Hunt and and of course my kiddos looked Fedorable!

My family has the best tradition of $$ in the Easter Eggs for adults. The hot ticket egg has $20 in it! I scored $11 this year.

We gathered the kids for our traditional “Jesus is Alive” photo. We had to add exclamation points for baby #4.

I have 4 kids.

That’s crazy.

InstaFriday–In the house and around town

my mug shotmy mug shot

I’ve mentioned that I’m back on coffee.
I needed a big giant mug the morning after the Hunger Games.
And I dropped a strawberry in my mug another day and discovered the strawberry soaks up the coffee – you get a flavor that delights the taste buds.

I love this little white trash faux hawk little booger boy.

OC Family Camp FairOC Family Camp Fair

Last weekend we headed on over to the Irvine Specturm for OC Family’s Summer Camp Fair. I had no idea how many camps there were in OC (though I don’t know why I was surprised!) Many of the camps did fun teaser shows about their camp on the main stage. It was a great family day. If you are looking for camps click here for a list!

Bubblefest Bubblefest

We got to go to Bubblefest at the Discovery Science Center! If your kiddos like bubbles they will have a fit for Bubblefest. You won’t believe all that can be done with bubbles. There are bleachers in the back for parents and a bubble zone on the floor in the front for kids.

mommy lifemommy life

Isn’t being a parent rad! You get to go to open house to see silly things your kiddos say and you find sleepers and R2D2 in your sheets.
Savoring each wild moment. Because I have a feeling it will be over before I know it.

That over before I know it part. Yep.

jury duty

I got summoned. My first time in 31 years. I have no clue why it took so long – I’ve voted in every election large and small since I was 18! I can’t going because I’m nursing and don’t have childcare for the littles. But I was pretty excited to go. I can’t think of anything better than a good book and being in a room full of people I don’t have to feed, wipe or even talk to… for the whole day!! Hopefully next year!

Lovebeams

photo

Do you ever gaze into the eyes of your baby and try to convey all the love in your heart with your glance? Knowing she can’t understand your words and that mere words wouldn’t be powerful enough to convey the depth of your love.

Willing her to fathom that you are her biggest fan, that you never want her heart to be broken, that you will be her support always.

Begging with your eyes for her to comprehend that you love just the way she was made. And because she is yours.

Like beams of love right from your eyes to hers. Imprinting onto her soul.

Lovebeams!

Do you?

Yeah?

Me too.

What’s next?

I hope you know that I REALLY love love love our Lids. I designed them for practical moms (like me), who want their kiddos to look stylish (like I used to be). My kiddos REALLY wear them all the time.
Eli’s Lids has been slowly growing! I cant believe I made the first Lid for Eli 5 years ago!
(Eli at 5 months old in my first prototype)

IMGP3921

Once they started selling a bit, we couldn’t afford a whole roll of different colored fabric, so I painstakingly hand dyed light fabric for some basic colors. Just 7 Lids in each color the first time! Then we got cute tags for the back. Boy did I feel awesome when I saw my logo in a woven tag!! (Eli at 16 months in one of my dyed Lids with the outside tags)

IMGP7318

Then we got to buy whole rolls of colored fabric. That was AMAZING.
I couldn’t believe it!
(December 2010)

IMG_5325
As we grow, I get to add more and more to Eli’s Lids.
We are growing because of you!
Y-O-U!!!
I always want Eli’s Lids to be changing and growing and evolving. (And myself, for that matter!)
I want to be better than the rest.
Because of you!
Y-O-U!
My vision for Eli’s Lids is changing as well.
We’ll always make awesome Lids for hip kiddos. And we’ll always get to help some great people. (Surfers Healing & Henry)
But now we get to change the world.
Just a little… or maybe a lot.
More on that in a few months. (Waiting is lame. Sorry.)
Something I can tell you now…
In about a month we’ll have some new colors!
I love them.
Ocean Aqua, Spring Green and O-live You.
(Get it? I love you, O-live you. Yes? or not so much? If you can think of a better name for Olive-ish, brown-sih, green-ish than you’ll get a free Lid. REALLY!)

What’s after that??

Kids in Lids

Sometimes after folks buy Lids they send me pictures of their adorable kiddos wearing them (or post them on our Facebook page).

I love it.

Like really LOVE it.

Because I really think people who buy Lids are my friends.

Is that weird??

Anyway, some Sundays I feature one of the Kids in Lids pictures sent to me!

Here is the first Fedorable picture sent to me. Yay yay yay!!!

photo

This is 3 and a half year old Sydney. Her mama snapped this pic on the car ride to school. Sydney insisted on wearing it!

A lot of parents are telling me that their kiddos love wearing their Fedorables everyday. It’s super comfy and lightweight. The cooler alternative to a bucket hat. Not that I’m bias or anything.
