Christmas Crafts Part 3: Wooden Nativities

These simple nativities were our party favors at out little shin dig. Print this for the pattern and paint colors. You can make this any size (my mom did huge ones one year and they were fabulous) and you can make them out of wood or cardboard… I even thought it would be fun to do it with felt… let the creative juices flow!
My mom (Suzie Says) cut the wood for my nativities on her scroll saw and this post will show you how to do the rest.

Eli helped “organize” them as I painted the main color on the bodies.

Then I painted circles for the faces, and the other embellishments (shown on the pattern), the stable and the stars. Use a fine tip sharpie to add in all the details. Outline the face, in between the colors, and the facial features. Remember that this is vintage kinda folk art so things don’t have to be (and shouldn’t be) perfect.
Next, I use a speckle tool (yes, there is such thing as a speckle tool) but you can use a tooth brush. Water down some black paint (just a tiny bit of water!) practice first on a white piece of paper then speckle till the cows come home. This really adds a cute vintage element to the finished piece.

Lay them close together for the speckling so it will be nice and even… oh and you’re only speckling the front. (I like the word speckle!) Speckle to your hearts content! Have a wet paper towel close by because inevitably you will get a giant splash on Jesus’ face… and well, we just can’t have that, can we? Oh and this is messy… I kept speckling myself. The last step is the finishing coat. I used a spray gloss. This will seal the paint and give the colors a deeper richer shade. If you don’t do gloss the paint will become chalky and can rub off on other wood pieces. Do the back first and lay them farther apart so you can start to get the sides. It has to dry for an hour. Then flip them over and lay them much farther apart so you can get all the sides… spray the heck out of it! It takes an hour to dry to the touch and then a full 24 hours to fully dry.
I wrapped them in a small celo bag and then tied it with raffia. I think it added to the folky look. They were a huge hit, and I can’t wait to give the others to neighbors and friends as Christmas comes closer!

The After-party

We had a lot of cake leftover… the frosting had loads of toddler finger scoops… we weren’t saving it!
I smushed it with my hand.
It just seemed right.
Hot Hubby had some interesting ideas on what we could do with the leftover frosting!
We also had a bunch of chocolaty goodness from the chocolate fountain. Being the God fearing woman that I am, I just couldn’t let that liquid heaven go to waste. Chocolate covered strawberries and chocolate drizzled pretzels… yummy…

Happy Birthday Jesus Party…

This year was the year of the sick kiddos. We had a much smaller group but it worked out well because we got to break out the gingerbread house and really relax while the little ones played.
Last year’s fun chaos…This year’s quiet wonder…Preparing for our guests…Hot Hubby telling the Christmas story to a group of toddlers… quite entertaining!

Typical man… eating while the women do the cooking!!

Wait for it…

Wait for it…

Wait for it…

Got it!!!

Holiday Transitions…

My little apartment is slowly transitioning through the holidays. I have gotten rid of the mushy pumpkins but I think I’m going to paint the leftover ones red and green and maybe blue with stars and coat them with glitter… I just can’t bear to throw them out… I’m lame! We made these awesome Indians on Thanksgiving and I just think they need at least 3 weeks as our center pieces before they are packed away for next year… again, I’m lame!

So our decor for the next week will be Halloween meets Thanksgiving meets Christmas…

Christmas Crafts Part 2: Advent Wreath

I heart advent traditions!! We made this advent wreath… and it is SUPER easy!! They sell advent wreaths and advent candles (they are suppose to be specific colors) at any craft store. Spice it up a bit with some ribbon and you have a meaningful Sunday tradition. Print this for the weekly traditions.
I used some wire ribbon and tags. I think I would have done something a bit more extravagant but I found the ribbon and tags in the dollar section and I just wanted it done… ever get that feeling? I still heart it… but next year I see wide silver glittery ribbon, deep blue tulle, silver stars and maybe a silver little bird or two!!

Christmas Crafts Part 1: Countdown Chain

Make this Advent Chain to countdown the days till Christmas!!
This is so simple for young kiddos to do. Print this on the paper of your choice, cut, then staple. Starting December 1st (you’ll need to catch up on a few days… oh well!) you tear one loop each day till Christmas.

Melted chocolate chips and animal crackers… this is addicting and I highly recommend it to curb an emergency chocolate craving.

Eli thinks peeling crayons is the bee’s knees… I think he remembers our crayon melting fun. Or maybe he just likes peeling paper off crayons…
