How to Throw a Craft Weekend with your Friends {awesome giveaway too!!}

I have some amazing girl friends.
And so do you.
So why not plan a craft weekend with them?

How to plan a craft weekend

All you need to do is: plan a few crafts, set a price, then plan a day.

Our crafts cost $40. We completed 5 DIY projects in a 24 hour period: a huge ruler growth chart, button earrings, mason jar vases, a pallet sign, and a wrapped frame with interchangeable printables.

24 hours of DIY

Ruler growth chart. Fabric covered button earrings. Mason Jar wall vases. Pallet California sign. Wrapped frame.

We had everyone arrive Friday evening after dinner. And planned on crafting the next day till dinner time. Any crafting that needed time to dry (i.e. staining our wood) was done the night before. We had so much fun talking and crafting the night away! Plenty of snacks were around and each guest was given a food assignment for the next day, so breakfast and lunch were covered.

If you are planning on doing an overnighter, I would HIGHLY recommend farming out your kids and husband! You will have so much more fun with your friends, without kid wrangling… unless it’s a non-mobile baby that still needs mama’s milk. Then you bring that little sucker and there will be plenty of hands to hold her!

Our last craft weekend we did an early morning flea market trip. This time me and a friend snuck out for a donut run and a few garage sales. That was fun! Since you have the whole day without kids, plan a field trip somewhere kids are a pain in the rear.
You know I adore my kids… but bringing them to the Flea Market at 6am.
Um… I can think of eleventy billion things I would rather do.

crafty moms in PJs

I got to sleep till 8:30 am, go garage sale-ing, then chillax with friends, AND I left with 4 spectacular decorations for my home and 3 pairs of earrings.
I also wore my PJs for 24 hours straight.
It was glorious.

We were blessed with some pretty amazing swag from some pretty amazing shops.
How fun is that!!?!?
Wanna know something even funner? (I know that’s not a real word.)
Each shop gave one extra, so I can give them away to you!!!
One lucky winner will get these awesome items. Go ahead and check out their shops.

Anti Social Experiment Starts by Getting our Creative on

(This is my personal action step after my social media rant post.)

I enjoy social media, but I believe it creates the false illusion of authentic relationships.
It got me thinking – How can I combat this in my life?
A real-life gathering.
Obviously.
My stipulations were – we had to meet regularly, I wanted to be outward focused (meaning some sort of purpose involved), and the planning/interaction couldn’t be centered around social media. (I actually thought we would go through a book as well… but I usually tend to be over ambitious, and that flopped…it is an experiment…)
Is it even possible to plan an event without using social media?
It’s kinda a pain in the a&$ but totally doable.
Here is my Warfare Against Superficial Relationships Among Women as a Result of the False Sense of Closeness that Comes from Using Social Media Group.
But I just call it, my Anti-Social Experiment.
Since this is an experiment… then I guess what follows is my data!
Maybe after reading this, you can conduct your one experiment too!
Inviting Women
I’m an over inviter. I can’t help it. I never want anyone to feel left out. I felt uncomfortable calling specific friends because I didn’t want the group to feel exclusive to anyone. So I did a status update invite on Facebook… because that’s where the moms are (see yesterday’s post) to see if anyone was interested. I quickly had almost 60 comments from lovely ladies who were interested and excited.
Yeeessssss (I thought)… this is exactly what everyone has wanted. Needed. I thought I’d have about 6 interested ladies but now we have a group of like 40 rad women are going to change the world!!!
So I shot out a comment with a request for all interested parties to email, text or message me their snail mail address and contact numbers.
Crickets.
And that’s what I don’t like about facebook. It felt phony. I know, I know… people are busy or may have never followed up with the comments. And when you see something you want to do on a facebook status, it’s so easy jump right before thinking of your actual schedule. But I think social media has made it easier to spread the word about things but also easier to half-commit or flake out.
Any-hoo, I feel it was important for people to have some sort of “call to action” step. I felt/feel like then I would get people who really want to do it, and who weren’t over committed already. I think a big goal is to have a somewhat regular group of women each week. So we can build relationships.
The Invitation
I ended up having about 20 women who responded and were on the list. That was awesome! But how the hay do you get all the information out to this many (busy) ladies without social media. Eeeeep!
I really wanted to create a FB group and call it a day.
But then it wouldn’t be much of an anti social media group, now would it?
I’m the first to admit that I can’t stand paper invites.
Yes, it’s so fun to get happy mail and I love cute/clever ones but I feel like it’s such a waste of paper, and postage is re-donk-u-lus.  I thought about doing an evite (that’s my usual), but I really did want to evoke a sense of excitement and the truth is, women love extra details.
I whipped up a sweet little invite, and made it cute by sewing across the paper. I also did a zig-zag stitch across the envelop. It was adorable.
anti social invite

The thing about snail mail invitations… the information you send doesn’t get there instantly and you can’t add to it instantly if you forget anything. So I had to get the invites out asap with everything guests needed to know ahead of time.
Being this prepared is very much not me.
Let’s just say I’m more carefree.
But I got the word out and people came.
15 rad women.

yarn supplies

Choosing an Activity
I like crafts, and it’s my group, so we did crafts.
Not really.
I do like crafts, but that’s why I chose something creative.
I’ve found when people are in a group, and have something to do, conversation just comes naturally. And who doesn’t like having a lovely to take home?
I picked a simple craft that people would be able complete while they were at my house. Though I think some people were a little too chatty and didn’t finish… but that’s a great problem to have! For our first meeting we made a Halloween pom pom garland!
anti social halloween garland
The goal was to make one garland for yourself and one for a neighbor you didn’t know very well… AND if you still had time, I wanted the ladies to make enough for some our local Meals on Wheels team to take on their run. But like I’ve said before… I’m sometimes a little over ambitious… and that part didn’t get done.
It is an experiment.
Each guest brought $5 to cover their supplies, so each guest got to bring home their own pom pom maker. Now I’m sure you are wondering what else you could possible make out of pom poms… well… like I told my friends – The possibilities are endless!
Right after our first Anti-Social Experiment I was gifted the book Pom-Poms! from the So Cal Social… such great ideas! (The book is from Quirk Books and I just popped on over to their site and LOVE their stuff… if you have a hard-to-gift-person on your Christmas, list then you need to check them out!)pom pom book

Food and preparing the house
The Anti-Social Experiment meets between breakfast and lunch (right after various school drop-offs, and before naps and other pick-ups) so I don’t have to organize an actual meal. I ask guests to bring something to share and I supply coffee. Guests can bring anything – store bought McDonalds hash browns (been done), or lovingly made mini surprise inside cupcakes (also been done). If someone’s budget is tight that week, or they don’t have time to put something together… or they just plain forget, well, that’s ok too. I just want friends to get to my place. We’ve had more than enough each time.
Some people freak out at the thought of having 15 guests in their home (plus the umpteen children that come along with an event like this). I’m not one of those people. Remember…I lean more toward the carefree end of the spectrum. I don’t mind if people see my messy house or if there isn’t a unique centerpiece. Anyway, for those of you who are going to host your own Anti-Social Experiment and who tend to be a little… um… less carefree, here a a few things for you to think about: Don’t go crazy cleaning. This is true for most events with lots of children invited – only the first two guests will see your immaculate house before the kid whirlwind sweeps though so it isn’t practical. And guests will be doing messy crafts. Save all your cleaning energy for after the party.

During Experiment
Women came, we prayed, I taught the group how to make the pom pom garland, then we ate yummy food and made pom poms.
It was simple and fun.
I’m sure some conversations started with “Did you see the post..?” but I never heard them. I heard conversations focused on the present and each of our lives at that moment.
About our project.
About our family’s week.
Anxiety about upcoming life changes.
New jobs.
A recent miscarriage.
There was loads of laughing, some tears, and never an awkward silence.
It was beautiful and could never be replicated on social media.

Conclusion
We’ve met twice and each time has exceeded my expectations in participation, and creativity. My Anti-Social Experiment has fulfilled all my main goals – face to face interaction, women being creative, and transparent conversation.
A difficult part has been the communication through snail mail. The group turnaround is very quick because the meetings are so close together. I love that people are getting “real mail” instead of email. But I need to prepare and buy supplies a couple of days in advance so the RSVPs are important. I could limit the number of people i.e. buy/prepare for 12, and once it’s full, it’s full. But that feels very exclusive, and I don’t like that. I’d love for The Experiment to grow and for people to start their own. And I’d love guests to be able to invite friends.
It’s also a lot of work for guests to remember to RSVP with snail mail (at least it is for me). And I don’t want the group to be a burden to guests.
I’m not sure what the communication looks like for the group yet. I would love to get in a rhythm and be more word of mouth. I might try texting for the next meeting.
I’ll let you know how that works out!
(And the Anti-Social Experiment continues.)

Rainbow Unicorn Birthday Party

Rainbow Unicorn party

Cora Jane picked a Rainbow Unicorn themed party.

Because of course she did.

(see last year’s Rainbow Puppy party here)

This theme was a lot of fun, and lo and behold, they actually make rainbow unicorn stuff!

The Birthday Outfit: Cora Jane’s outfit was completely handmade with a lot of love by our good friend Patti. Wow, are we blessed! Floor length rainbow tutu, beaded rainbow heart tee, rainbow headband, rainbow bracelets, AND cloud/rainbow wand.

             Rainbow outfit Rainbow birthday outfit

Décor: Rainbow flowers from Sam’s Club, rainbow lanterns and poofs from Party City to hang in the trees, rainbow chevron fabric with colored glass lanterns for each table. I have no pix of the tables. They were adorable!!! I used a rainbow fabric strip bunting (my friend Kyla and I made together) behind the cake table and other random stuff from Cora Jane’s Rainbow Room too.

Rainbow birthday decor    Rainbow birthday lanterns

Menu: The boyz barbecued chicken and we had loads of fruit, chips, salsa, rainbow gold fish (Eli’s idea) and macaroni salad. Water and pink lemonade in rainbow unicorn cups with rainbow curly straws. (Easy and CHEAP… I used to do pizza or Subway with juice boxes, but doing chicken and having a drink dispenser really really cuts the cost… a lot!)

BBQ rainbow fruit bowlsrainbow fruit bowls Drink dispencers from Sam's Club

Cake: I got the cake and cupcakes at Sam’s Club then added the sparkle candles, rainbow unicorn toppers. and put them on the rainbow unicorn cake stand.

She loved them!

Entertainment: Unicorn stickers on a table with paper and crayons, bubbles, chalk, a mini bounce house my in-laws brought, and a piñata!

The piñata was decapitated after the 5ish kid. It looked pretty darn morbid hanging there while children picked up the candy that had poured out of his flying carcass.

Why do I love piñatas so much? I have no idea.

But I do.

The rainbow birthday hat was made by my friend Cheri at Sweet Lily Tutus!. Cora Jane LOVES it and it’s now a decoration in her rainbow room

Favors: The favors were adorable! But would you believe I don’t have any pictures!?!? Otter pops with a unicorn horn lollipop tied with curly ribbon. It was super super super cute (and inexpensive and fun).

Cora’s expression here kills me…

It was a good day.

And a sad day.

The first birthday party without my mom. The first birthday party Cora Jane didn’t get a custom Nannie-made-pillowcase. But we are blessed. We were surrounded by people who love us and who we love. My grandmom made Cora Jane a special rainbow pillowcase. She was overjoyed!

It was a good day.

Lovin’ Pony Royale

pony royale map

We were introduced to Pony Royale by my friends Jaime and Kyla over the summer. They were love at first sight for my lil’ sparkle loving girl.

little girls like pony royale   little girls like pony royale princesses

She enjoyed them so much, I contacted the lovely folks at Pony Royale to see if we could have a pony party too.

They said yes!

I invited a bunch of like-minded-sparkle-lovers over for an after school snack and the girls each got to take 2 ponies home!

(If you want to take one home, keep reading!)

The menu: Fruit and chocolate filled Twinkies on fancy dishes.

(Side note: I love the Pony Royale map. I’m in the process of folding a few of the extras into fan circles to hang in Cora Jane’s room…. sooooo cute!)

pony royale party snacks

Each of the 12 princess ponies has a unique character quality and birthstone. These ponies are great for lil’ gals who are a bit too old for the Little Ponies but are still into glitz and glamor. The colorful manes and tails can be swapped with other ponies and each pony comes with an extra set.

A few little brothers were at the party also. They ended up in the back yard playing in the dirt and fighting with sticks.

True story.

How awesome is that hectic pony hair!?!?! Cora said Harmony was caught in a windstorm and is currently brushing it out.

Angry Bird Birthday Party {Simple Tips}

Eli wanted an Angry Bird birthday party this year and it really turned out to be a fun (read simple) theme to put together!

Angry Bird Birthday Party

I made some orange ruffle wreaths for the front doors and added angry bird flare. (wreath tutorial coming soon) The wreath on the left was filled with angry birds and the one on the right piggys, of course. I cut the images from the party supply packaging and used regular tape to attach to the wreaths. Easy and FREE! (Random wreath thought: Orange is super versatile for a wreath! I pin on bright color felt flowers for summer, primary colors for back to school, yellow/brown for fall and black for Halloween.)Angry Bird Birthday Party decor

As kiddos arrived they could play our Angry Bird backyard game. I found rubber balls at CVS on clearance for $.49 and used my mad art skillz to draw the characters. We borrowed some big blocks from my mom’s house and had a game. The balls doubled as party favors! (tip: I used a blanket for the balls for easy clean-up and we put a board on top of a wagon to build the piggy buildings) The game was a hit and the kiddos played throughout the party

Since we started doing small kid centered parties I was able to have fun with the tables settings. I used a rectangle of red construction paper on the front of the juice box and two black paper strips to make Angry Bird eyebrows. The pom pom chandelier from our Back to School Feast was perfect for the party! (Note to self: ALWAYS make the Back to School Feast colors coordinate with Eli’s bday theme!) I also made angry eyebrows for the fruit bowls running down the center of the table. EASY and fun!

I figured the boys (and a few girls) would eat their pizza then run around like crazies and graze on the fruit for the rest of the party.

They did. 6-year-old boys are rad.

Then we played pin the tail on the Angry Bird.

Oh yeah, the rad thing about the kid only party… you can do kid games and the kids are totally into it!!! Eli loved explaining the rules of the game.

Piñata, of course. (I love piñatas!!!)

Angry Bird Birthday Party ideas

It was an awesome day and I’m so so so happy we are starting the kid party thing. It was fun and relaxing and all about the birthday boy.

Party at a glance for an Angry Bird Birthday Party of your own:

Décor: Wall décor package, happy 6th birthday banner, lime table cloths, red and lime scrap fabric runners, tissue pom pom chandelier, orange ruffle wreaths and Angry Bird eyebrows on everything. (Party City or made by me.)

The menu: Pizza, pringles, veggie chips, watermelon, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, grapes and juice boxes with angry bird eyebrows. (Pizza from Little Cesar’s and everything else Sam’s Club)

Dessert: Mini cake and cupcakes with Angry Bird rings on top. (Angry Bird candles from Party City and cake/cupcakes with rings from Sam’s Club.)

Favors: Bouncy balls with Angry Bird faces drawn on and Piggy cups with “Angry Bird eggs” bagged up inside, aka peanut M&M’s. (Balls from CVS and Angry Bird cups from Party City M&Ms from Sam’s)

The kid party guest list

I’ve just finished two back to back kiddo birthday parties. We love having people over and I love planning parties, but there is always the question of the guest list. You know what I’m talking about. There’s the family, friends, your kids friends, school friends, church friends, people you want to be your friends… the list can really go on and on and on. And you never want to accidently hurt anyone’s feelings.

We’ve always done a bigger party – inviting all our family, all our friends and all their kids. Honestly, I’ve never really thought about doing it differently until this last year when we were invited to two different parties. For one party the mom handed me the invite and said, “it’s for you and Cora Jane,” and the other one said “drop off or one parent” at the bottom of the invite. The parties were great and very kid centered. I really enjoyed the one with Cora Jane because the awesome host, Jaime, got to do all sorts of girly things for the butterfly theme and I got one on one time with my girl.

This year, I was planning Eli’s 6th birthday, because of all our moving (church and geographical) our friend list had grown and our family list has always been big. I was inspired by the year’s party invites and decided to take the plunge into the Kid Only thing.

6 would be the year.

Yep.

I will have the guts to pick and choose.

Nope.

Nope, I don’t.

Let’s have Eli choose.

Yeah, it’s always the best idea to put all the burden on your child.

IMG_7165 copy

We asked Eli who he wanted to invite and it actually worked out great. He rattled off the names of the friends he plays with most, and we were done. Whew. Then there was the family. We have a very small family but our regular “family attenders” are at least 12 and that ups the guest list quite a bit.

Family dinner!

Yep a family dinner.

6 would be the year we start family birthday dinners.

Yep, I will have the guts to tell the grandparents and aunties they aren’t invited to his bday.

This actually went very well. I think they were all a little bummed, but we chose a central location for an easier drive and everyone got to have focused time on Eli instead of just hanging out at a big party with 30+ kids (yes, that’s how big the family parties are). It turned out great!

IMG_8098

And we all know family gives the best gifts. (Thank you Yaya and Papu for padding the college fund!)

Case and point…

IMG_8111 IMG_8113 IMG_8116

(This was also the first year we officially did gifts. But that’s a whole other post…)

Because switching to the don’t bring your family thing could be a little touchy, here’s how I worded the invite for the kiddo party (see “details” section):

Your kiddo is invited to Eli’s 6th Angry Bird Birthday!
Date: Sunday, September 16
th
Time: 1:30pm (pizza lunch!)
Where: Our lovely home
Gifts: No gifts needed – Please don’t feel like you have to bring a gift. We love celebrating Eli with time and attention most. REALLY!! But if you like, Eli loves legos, star wars and pirate stuff. And needs jeans & shorts size 8 regular… hand-me-downs would be great.
Details: Now that Eli is the ripe age of 6 we are starting the smaller party thing so we can have kid centered activities. Fun! You can drop off if you like, or one parent can stay with the kiddo invited to the party. Food and cake for all! Don’t fret if you need a Lawson fix for the whole family… we are having Tessa’s big 1 year party on 9/29. Let me know if you have any questions.
RSVP by Friday so I can have all the goodies ready.
So thankful for you friends

I tried to make it approachable for questions so people would feel comfortable telling me if their spouse couldn’t watch siblings not invited or if they had an out of town guest that needed to come. Of course acceptations would be ok! (Am I the only one who takes an hour to write a simple invitation?) I really didn’t want to offend anyone.

Now that everything is said and done, I can say the kid party/family dinner thing was AWESOME! I got to spend time on fun kid details (post coming this week) and the family got quality play time with Eli. Oh and did I mention this was way friendlier on the budget!?!? Yep!! Now the official “thing” in our family is big all-in-family-friend parties till 5-years-old then kid specific parties/family dinners starting at 6-years-old. I’d love to know what you do, or if you have better wording for a kiddo only party invitation!

Back to School Feast 2012

Back to School Feast

This year’s Back to School Feast theme was Psalm 25:5 (see last years here)

“Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior and my hope is in you all day long.”

During dinner, Brad talked about growing in faith and wisdom. He talked about how we are set apart and that if we are sad we have true hope in Jesus. We can depend on God ALL DAY LONG. No matter what. All the time. Then we gave Eli a special blessing for the school year.

Blessing kids Blessing kids

The décor was all circles, color and silly.

Table settings:
~Red wrapping paper cut in a wavy line as table runners
~Bright beaded necklaces down the middle of the table
~Colored 3×5 cards as name plates
~Mismatched colorful dinnerware
~Molding foam and a back to school book for each guest for dinner play

I made this poof chandelier with a small hula hoop, curly ribbon and tissue paper. (Thanks Amanda!) 1) Stack 6 pieces of tissue paper. 2) Cut piles into 4 squares. 3) Stack into two piles, 12 pieces in each pile. Set one pile aside and fold the other one like a fan. 4) Tie a length of ribbon to the center of the fan (you’ll have a bow shape). 5) Separate tissue pieces and fluff into a poof shape. 6) use the extra length of ribbon to hang around the hula hoop.

Menu:
~Ravioli with meat sauce
~Spinach salad with carrots and cherry tomatoes
~Strawberries, blueberries, grapes
~A dollop of nutella for fruit dipping

We wore the necklaces from the table, read the books during dinner and let the kiddos play with the toys (a treat around here).

Back to school feast table play

Dessert:
~White cake (dyed blue with food coloring) with chocolate frosting and a strawberry on top. I baked them in these neat silicone cupcake thangs I got years ago. They have feet and they are adorable.

We had so much fun! I feel like this celebration sets the stage for a great school year. We have our feast the night before school starts, but I think it would be fun to close out the first week too! (I spent less than $20 on the supplies at the Dollar Tree!)

While Eli was at school we baked cookies, then ate them later while he told us all about his day. That was special too. I think I’m gonna like this new phase of life. I think I don’t have a choice. My time stopping remote control is broken. I keep trying to hit pause, but it’s stuck on fast forward. I can grasp on to what’s already gone or look ahead. I’ll choose to look ahead. I choose joy. And eating cookie dough. Yep, eating lots of cookie dough sure does help.

Rainbow Puppy Birthday Party

little girls

I have a little girl.

She dances to the beat of her own little drum.

A drum that’s orange, covered in rainbow sparkles with puppies, and flamingos jumping out.

She picks out her own clothes.

She’s scared to get her ears pierced.

She might really think she’s Rapunzel.

She likes what she likes.

From the depth of her pretty little brain she came up with a rainbow puppy party.

Here’s how it went…

We remembered to do a family picture before the party, in hopes of getting a good shot before the party sugar set in…

rainbow party

Um… that went well.

I made Cora Jane’s skirt out of Dollar Tree tee shirts. (It came out really cute and I hope to share how it’s done soon!)

rainbow party favors  rainbow party favors

Favors: All from Oriental Trading company. Rainbow stamps, tattoos and candy bundled up in rainbow bandanas. They added so much color outside.

I cut each large bandana into 4 squares for the bundles. And I couldn’t believe Oriental Trading Company had rainbow colored “dog bones” (I think they are meant to be skeleton bones for Halloween) and bright paw print stamps. Total score. Double sided stamps and rainbow tattoos finished off the favors. Total cost was about $1.25!

rainbow party food rainbow party food

Menu: Pizza, a rainbow of fruit and veggies, chips and every color of Gatorade.

Big Mama pizzas from our favorite, Rosa’s Pizza. Each pizza has 45 slices. The fruit was set out in rainbow order – red apples, watermelon, strawberries, sliced oranges, carrots, yellow tomatoes, yellow raspberries, bananas, snap peas, cucumbers, blueberries and purple grapes. (This was the first party we ran kinda low on the main dish. It was pretty rad to NOT have leftovers, but we should have gotten another smaller pizza to add to the bunch.)

  rainbow party  rainbow lanterns

Décor: Rainbow and puppies. (hehehehe)

I covered our unfinished counters with bright table clothes and used the leftover bandanas as runners. I used paper plates to camouflage the unfinished backsplash (pictured above with the fruit). We didn’t fool anyone, but it looked festive. I made a rainbow-puppy-paw-print fabric strip banner for behind the cake and my talented friend Jill created a rainbow puppy graphic for me to print, and I hung it up all over the place. We found some great rainbow flower windmill things at the Dollar Tree and placed them around the yard. But my favorite favorite favorite part were rainbow the colored lanterns we hung in our kick a$& tree. I LOVE THEM! I’ve kept them up and every time I look in my yard they make me smile. I think I’ll go look at them now… (sigh)… happy heart.

    rainbow cake  rainbow cupcakes

Cake: I love custom cakes but there is just something special (to me) about making my kiddo’s birthday cakes. That being said, when you can get a cake for $10 at Sam’s Club and 30 cupcakes for $13… I let “the club” do the baking and background frosting and I just spice it up a bit! (I do this for almost all our parties.) For Cora Jane’s cake I added a rainbow banner, a puppy candle (had to get a dozen at Oriental Trading and only used one, so if you want some just shoot me an email and I’ll bless you with some happy puppy mail!), the rainbow dog bones (from the favors), and rainbow sour belts. Each cupcake got a rainbow puppy, a rainbow, and dog bones of their own. It was cute.

Cora Jane loved it…

    rainbow cake rainbow party

Then we beat the heck out of a rainbow. I’m not sure why, but I’m a huge fan of pinatas. I feel like a party without a pinata is just hanging out… I’m strange.

rainbow pinata rainbow pinata

Group shots are another of my party MUSTS…

rainbow party

rainbow girl

Cora Jane wants a rainbow puppy room. Because, of course she does.

But that’s awesome because I can use the banner and extra bandanas as room décor. I also found this awesome rainbow fabric for curtains. She hated it. Oh wait… the opposite of that…

House stuff is slowly moving along now and I can’t wait to share pix!

Have a Pinterest Party

Are you on Pinterest yet? If you haven’t heard about Pinterest, here’s what it is… (my explanation)

Pinterest is hard to describe… mmmmmmm… it’s a way to organize all the fun stuff you see online. Let’s say you find a great idea for a birthday party, but the party is three months away. So you make a mental note to remember that idea. You could print it on paper (remember that stuff?) but you know you won’t find it again, and who needs more paperwork (MOM!!!)? Three months of school, laundry, work, life, love, smiles, cries and burnt dinners (oh, that last one is just me) go by and the party comes and goes. It’s great, of course, but the next day you are on the Internet and you stumble across the idea again and you’re like. “Cr%$!!!! That would have been awesome!!”

Pinterest is an online “pin board” for you to put the links you find. So if you find that perfect rainbow cupcake you can click it, and virtually put it on your Birthday Party Pin board. The link goes there along with a picture and you can put a note next to your pin. Like, “try this with felt” or “the perfect gift for mom” or… you get the idea. People have boards for each of their children, sewing, wedding planning, places they want to visit, meal plans, funny sites… the list goes on and on and on and on and on…

The problem with Pinterest is it’s easy to spend all your time “pinning” and never actually doing.

Have a Pinterest Party.

Problem solved!!!!

Any excuse to get together with friends and eat is awesome.

Right!?!?!

My first experience with a Pinterest party was just before Christmas. The hosts picked three projects from their pin boards – things they thought could be finished in one evening and asked everyone to bring $20, their glue gun and a treat to eat (from their pin boards, of course). I brought my $20, forgot my glue gun and I don’t even have a recipe pin board because cooking just isn’t my thang… I brought bruschetta from Sam’s Club and they let me stay anyway.

How fun is that!

So fun!

Later I was hanging with some friends after the Queen Bee Market and tossed out the idea. We’ve been faithful to our Pinning Party every 6 weeks-ish.

The first party was in January so we did a Valentine’s Day fabric banner, heart pom pom necklace…

…and we made this Life is Beauty-Full sign (tutorial coming soon!) and that little frame to the left was the craft fail of the evening but I think I salvaged mine to displayable status.

Side Note: The fabric banner is one of my all time favorite crafts ever. Sooooooo easy. I’ve made one for every holiday since. Make one for spring. Now.

I wasn’t able to go to the next party because it was on our anniversary weekend (I was bummed) but you better believe I paid my $20 and got all the craft supplies I need for the projects. I can’t wait to get them finished and share them. Check out this post and this post all about the party to see the crafties.

Last weekend we got our craft on again with this lil’ beauty and the flowers on this ‘L’ (I yarned the L at the first Pinterest party I attended). Plus a few more I need to finish or take better pix. (I’ll share someday!)

Here is how we organize our Pin Parties.

Step 1 – Send out an evite. We’ve met on weekday evenings after kiddos are in bed and on weekends.

Step 2 – Choose the Pins. Try to pick things you can get done in one night and if they can’t be finished in one evening make sure you can send the needed supplies home with each guest. i.e. if the craft requires some crazy gadget only you have, be sure that craft is finished at the party, if it just requires hot glue then it’s OK to send it home.

Step 3 – Buy supplies. After you have a final head count you can get all the stuff you need. The nice thing about doing group crafts is buying in bulk. And you can get something new or pricey because it comes in packs of 24. Divided among the group = cheap.

Step 4 – Hang, chat, eat, craft. Repeat.

It’s always good (for non cookers like me) if you have a few people in the group who are blessed in the kitchen. Once again I forgot to bring food… so thankful they are understanding. This time everything was delish but my most favorite were the carrot cake cookies and these peanut butter chocolate things. And the most fun treat was smores’ in a jar – pudding, crushed graham crackers, tiny marshmallows toasted with a torch. Awesome.

Our little core group of Pinners include Jaime, Aimee, Bev, Andrea and Kyla. But at each party the host sets the parameters about inviting friends. I’m hoping to host in our house (Squeeee, we have a house!) after we move in. Don’t you think the best way to get things done around the house is to host something? Anything.

Happy Pinning and Partying.
