Everyone can Help Someone

Sometimes I hear about things in this crazy world of ours, and I feel helpless. Then I remember this quote from Ronald Regan…

“We can’t help everyone… but everyone can help someone.”

(A free printable for you!)

Sundays – Psalms 100 {free printable}

These short 5 verses that make up Psalms 100, embody joy and thanksgiving to me. Which is probably why it’s been read for a thousand years for Jewish worship services (“Shacharit”).

Psalms 100 Free Printable

(Print the rad graphic above for free here)

Psalms 100

I was reminded this week that God came for everyone.
He has been faithful through all generations.
He certainly has been faithful to me.
This Friday will be a year since my mom passed away. I can’t believe I have a whole year of memories without her in them.
How is that even possible, when she feels so present to me everyday?
And so far away.

Worship is loud, being filled with gladness, joyful, singing, knowing the lord is God.
Worship is remembering where we are from, that we were created, and we are His.
Worship is being thankful, walking toward God, and respecting His name.
Worship is holding on to His goodness and love, which lasts forever.
Worship is believing that God will be faithful to my children, my great-grandchildren and my great-great-grandchildren…

20 Elis are dead

I can’t stop thinking about the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary school in Newtown. Eli is in kindergarten, and the same age as most of the victims.

20 Elis are dead.

                                  photophoto

Friday, the day of the shooting, I had started a post in my head reflecting on my children and about cherishing all of our little moments. But this isn’t about me, or my kids, or about being grateful for the simplicity of daily life. The reality is 20 moms in Newton will never have those “little moments” with their kids again. 20 families have carefully picked presents wrapped under their Christmas tree that will not be opened. 20 dads have to walk past their child’s empty bedroom.  Little siblings are wondering where their big siblings went. Big siblings are trying to make sense of injustice. A whole community has been changed.

20 moms have to watch as their fearfully and wonderfully made child gets closed up into a box and buried in the ground. Gone forever. Always wondering how life would have been different if their child was still alive. What if we had stayed home sick from school… what if we bought that house in a different district… what if Adam Lanza had a friend to talk him out of shooting children. When did shooting children become a way to express your hurt and anger and sadness and bitterness at the world. My God! My God, Why?

I would be scared of forgetting the feeling of Eli in my arms, the sound of his voice and his laugh. Fearful of watching an old home video and wondering if that time was ever really real. What will it be like for the Newton moms to fold the next load of laundry and find a tee shirt her child wore days ago but will never wear again? Everyday your heart breaking all over again. Weeping, screaming and hoping to wake up from this nightmare.

Across the country people are doing 20 acts of kindness in honor of the each murdered child. (Some are doing 26 to include the murdered adults.) I think it’s a great idea. If I was one of the 20 moms I would like to hear that thousands of people were doing good in honor of my precious lost child. But, of course, I would really just want my child back.

comfort others

I made the free printable pictured above (click here to print it) because I feel like it embodies the acts of kindness happening everywhere. I love this whole passage in 2 Corinthians.

But the most comforting passage for me when anything happens to children is Matthew 18 6-7 (The Message version). “But if you give them a hard time, bullying or taking advantage of their simple trust, you’ll soon wish you hadn’t. You’d be better off dropped in the middle of the lake with a millstone around your neck. Doom to the world for giving these God-believing children a hard time! Hard times are inevitable, but you don’t have to make it worse—and it’s doomsday to you if you do.”

Which basically shows what a jerk I am. God throwing evil people into the ocean with a giant stone tied around their neck and the word doomsday… yep, that about sums up my thoughts. I should probably work on that. But most likely I won’t.

I’m trying to decide how we are going to do the 26 acts of kindness. Maybe we’ll combine it with the Christmas sacrifices we are already doing. I don’t think you need to be legalistic about it, but making a list of 26 things you can do with your kids to comfort/help/serve others is an awesome start.

I’d love to know your ideas for the list or your thoughts about the shooting. Leave a comment, and if you’ve written a post, leave the link.

Favors Rule and a Favorite Things Printable

I hosted a Pinterest party a few weeks ago. It was soooooo much fun. The stress of having uber creative people in my undecorated house was a bit unnerving, but I think everyone had as much fun as I did! There was a lot of talent going on and I’m gonna show off for them a bit…by sharing their hostess gifts!

Bev from Flamingo Toes bought this dish towel from Anthropologie… oh wait… no she didn’t. SHE MADE IT. Embroidered free hand with her machine. A detailed bicycle. With lil’ flowers in the basket. I die. It’s truly a work of art and I’m going to put it on a shelf (I have yet to make) by my kitchen window. Those funky pom poms in the pic are an awesome homemade pom pom bunting from my friend Amanda. The only thing on my kitchen walls to date. Those gerber daisies? Grown from a seed by Aimee from Fancy Little Things. (J/K Not homemade but I love them.)

Richelle and Stephanie brought these mason jars (mason jar + spray paint + ripped fabric and bakers twine = awesome) with fresh flowers and 4 beautiful coasters (which I’ll use as kitchen décor on my future shelves as well!) with original artwork, designed by Richelle. Don’t you think she should have a shop? I want to enlarge some of her other designs for the kitchen.

Elizabeth from Sew Chatty made this pleated clutch. Which is just the right size for a kindle… which means I need a kindle to go with my clutch. Right?

Elizabeth also wrapped it really cute. Sooooo cute, I may have carefully taken out the clutch and saved the wrapping in hopes it will fit a future gift I give someone. Unless you think that’s weird, then I totally didn’t do that. Lame. (Or awesome? You be the judge.) Photobomb from our first pinterest party.

And Drew from Drew B Photography gave me this lil’ lovely. How the hay do they get such strong smells in such a lil candle? So so so yummy. And the perfect scent for summer.

Thank you friends!!

Now I understand it’s kinda mean for me to brag about all the presents I was spoiled with at the party. So I made this printable for you. (Inspired by a birthday gift Kyla brought me.) Print, then attach it to the front of a gift bag (extra points if you use a brown paper package tied up with string) filled with a few of your favorite things. Kyla gave me, cinnamon bears, new sharpies, milk duds, journal, gum, lip gloss, glow sticks, nail polish… Loved it. What a special gift!
