I got botox at CosmetiCare… and liked it!

I tried botox at CosmetiCare …and I liked it!

I always said I would NEVER do any kind of plastic surgery or beauty-type procedure. Even non-invasive ones. Mind you, I said that when I was in my mid-twenty with no wrinkles, and when I thought I was fat… but was 40 pounds lighter than I am today.

Do you ever want to go back in time and punch yourself in the face?
Me too.

Moving on…
You may have seen on instagram, I was chosen to be a CosmetiCare Mom! I get to test some of their most popular treatments, then give my opinion.
I tried the HydraFacial first and it was amazing!! I noticed my deepest wrinkles looked more shallow for about 2 months. But I wanted to try something a little more daring.

Botox? Well, that’s daring. Let’s do it!

I arrived for my appointment terrified.
Like heart-pounding-out-of-my-chest terrified!!!
They have coffee in their waiting room and that helped.
Even though it is a “medical” spa, the waiting room is cozy, it could use some magazines though. I’ve never had to wait very long so they probably don’t really need them that bad.

I was so nervous when I was called into the procedure room, but my medspa provider, Suzanne Rogers, was so comforting and encouraging. Each staff member at CosmetiCare is so friendly! She has been doing this for 15 years (yes folks, that was my first question) and talked me through everything.

Suzanne warned me the botox shots would hurt a bit. But they were fast and didn’t hurt me at all. It felt a little like acupuncture, and only took a few minutes.

Now that I’m almost a month out from my CosmetiCare medspa experience I have no idea why I was so worried or why there is such a stigma on this kind of thing. Seriously. I have friends who started saving for their boob jobs as soon as they found out they were pregnant with their first child. A huge majority of women don’t bat an eye about going under anesthesia, getting cut apart, then adding implants. It might be an Orange County thing (and if it is, then it’s coming to your town in a few years), but sometimes it’s hard to spot a woman in her 40s without implants. And I mean, how many people are seeing your boobs? Padding would do the same thing. But, botox? Something you can do in minutes. Never! And a gazillion people see your face every day!
That doesn’t make any sense.

I also should be clear that I liked the way I looked before the botox. I don’t even care if that sounds vain. I know I’m not a super model (and I don’t want to look like one… I like food too much… but I would like to travel like a super model). I don’t think I needed botox or any kind of treatments, but it sure was fun!!

I’ll lay out my pros and cons for my botox CosmetiCare treatments of below:

Botox ($400):
Cons –
-I got poked and injected with a drug.
-My forehead felt numb for the evening.
-I can’t make my forehead wrinkle anymore. (Is that really a con?)

Pros –
-The pokes didn’t hurt at all.
-It took minutes. (Less than a hour if you count waiting and drive time.)
-I can’t make my forehead wrinkle anymore! And because I can’t make my forehead wrinkle the lines on my forehead aren’t getting deeper and deeper every year.
-No injection marks or downtime.
-Lasts 4 months. (But I’ve heard it can last 6ish on some people.)
-It really works! Although it costs $$, since it works, it’s well worth it. More than the expensive wrinkle creams which don’t yield quick or effective results.

Final thoughts on botox –
I loved it. I’m considering making it part of my “don’t-let-yourself-go” routine. It lasts 4ish months, but I feel like if I do it every year it won’t break the bank and will keep my wrinkles from etching deeper into my forehead as I get older. A preventative measure.

I can’t stress enough with both the botox and Juvederm, that it actually works! You know how you go to the gym to get skinny. You shell out a monthly membership and childcare, work your behind off hours a week, and eat organic kale, all in the hope that you’ll look better in your jeans… in 6 months. With these CosmetiCare treatments you shell out some money and in one hour you have your results. It’s the best. Ever.

With that being said (typed), if you go to some random place you might get a botched job, or have a bad experience. I highly recommend CosmetiCare in Newport Beach. Dr. Michael Niccole has run this family owned business for 33 years. They know what they are doing and you really feel like you are part of the family when you are there for your appointments.

Below are some before and after pictures of my botox-ed forehead. They were both casual and I’m making the same facial expression so you can easily see the difference. I’m so expressive with my forehead that make-up was starting to build up in the creases by the end of the day.

And I can still look surprised… just a younger surprised.

Here is us on the Tower of Terror at Disneyland.
Though I think the people behind us, not my botox, really steal the show!

I’m voting tomorrow! Neel Kashkari

Tomorrow is the day we get to vote.
I love voting!
When I was in college, elections got me excited to be involved in the change. I loved learning about the candidates and researching the props.
Now, not so much. I feel a little jaded and get depressed when I see corrupt city councils.

Two weeks ago I got to interview Neel Kashkari about his education plan. It’s good… really good! Read it here. Below is a short video of our over an hour interview.
(Don’t hate me because I don’t hate common core.)

I love him! He crosses party lines in all the ways that matter.
And I think we call all agree that California needs someone other than Jerry Brown.
I don’t want to tell you how to vote, I want you to research for yourself and decide what’s important to you and your family… but if you don’t have time for that, then just vote for Kashkari. 😉

Some pictures from the day… I was wearing my power red dress, red lips and a sock bun… you you know I meant business.

Me and Magazines! {OC Family and HomeFront}

Often I write things, and my heart goes into every word, and I’m flooded with tears or laughter.
And no one says a word.
One time I was in a magazine for a hair tutorial.
And I’m recognized at the doctor’s office.
True story.
Fishtail braid tutorial
I had a great time doing this little shoot because I was helping out a friend. And I got some great tips from a make-up artist about how not to look tired when you are exhausted…

But sometimes I get to write from the heart AND lots of people get to see it!
And that’s the story with HomeFront Magazine.
Starting in February I have been able to write my little heart out for HomeFront and the magazine is just filled with awesome ideas for your family! You can view the magazine on their site or

In February I shared this really great family project and craft…

gold family letters

Pretty cute, huh?

To make your own you’ll need…

  • Paper mache craft letters F-A-M-I-L-Y
  • Drop cloth
  • Spray paint
  • A permanent marker

Prepare: Grab a drop cloth (we use an old sheet) and spray paint the front and back of your letters. Older children will enjoy painting but if you have small children, you may want to do this ahead of time.

Activity: Gather your family together to brainstorm in the following six categories – one for each letter in the word FAMILY. Use the permanent marker to write your ideas on the back of every letter. You’ll place the finished letters in a prominent area of your home, as a reminder to serve others in your faith community.

For the rest of the activity you’ll have to go to page 19 of the February issue of HomeFront Magazine!

I can’t wait to share more with you.

Season 4 of Arrested Development has arrived!

This show is a cult classic for Orange Countyians.
And I’m quite giddy that it’s back.

Wreck it Ralph movie review from Eli

We got to see a pre screening of Wreck it Ralph in 3D last night and Eli loved it… well actually he says not to go see it in the video. But he doesn’t mean that. (video spoiler alert: Ralph saves the day and the game gets fixed… whodathunkit?)

Overall, we loved the movie! Wreck it Ralph is great for boys and girls. The main characters voices, Vanellope and Ralph (by Sarah Silverman and John C Reilly) were perfection! The animation was great, and the 3D wasn’t obnoxious. The storyline – what goes on with video game characters after the arcade closes – was clever. I loved the common theme of accepting outcasts and just being nice to people. (BE NICE PEOPLE OF THE WORLD.) A deeper theme was, people can make decisions to better/change their own life even if circumstances, past situations and people make it difficult… and that giant killer robot bugs can be defeated with diet coke and mentos. Life changing knowledge, yo!

My most favorite part of everything was one on one time with my eldest. He is rad. I told him, and he asked if that’s what I tell all the “other kids” when I go out with them. I said yes, but he was my favorite. (I also tell that to all the “other kids” when I go out with them.) Tell your kiddo they are rad. Right now. Then take them out. Anywhere.

The Double Boob and 3 Tips for the Perfect Fitting Bra

I’m fat. But not as fat as I was after Tess was born. That leaves me in between sizes.

Bra sizes. (Can I get a “what-what” fellow nursing moms!?!?!?")

My before-Tess bras are too small and my right-after-Tess bras are too big.

I have a double boob.

You know the double boob. It fits me right after I nurse, then my gals fill up and try to bust out.

I was lamenting about this recently and came across this video I took after Cy was born – almost exactly two years ago. (7/16/2010)

Cy was about 3 weeks old and I was invited to the opening of the new {intimacy} store in South Coast Plaza. I was professionally fitted by the founder, Susan. Did you know every time you put on your bra, you are supposed to lean forward and let the “ladies” fall into their cups? I didn’t.

I took this video in the car right after the fitting. It was the first time I had taken my three kiddos out by myself (I was so proud to have three kids!). They were wild in the store and I remember being flustered when I was trying to shoot this video. I think I did a pretty good job considering I had to set up the shot with my canon and all three kiddos were in meltdown mode. The whole first part I’m talking to my kids about the video then I “turn on” for my segment. I had intended to cut the first part out for the blog but never got around to it. I’m glad I didn’t. I love getting a glimpse into my parenting style. Now you can too. And you can get the three bra fitting tips I learned as well.

Here at Small Things I share how we can all do Small Things to positively impact our families, our neighborhoods, our communities and the world. I also freelance for local and national publications.
